Prevent Axillary Heat from turning on manually!

zoning supply1 Comment

There are sometimes certain circumstances that might necessitate an ability to manually turn OFF the axillary heat function of a Heat Pump.

When using a heat pump, it is usually necessary to have an “Axillary Heat” source for the times of the year when the weather is just too cold for the compressor to be effective enough to provide sufficient heat. Depending on the location or part of the world you live in, this could be electric heat strips, gas furnace (including propane), oil or even wood fired axillary heat. Depending on the cost of these resources, it is often desirable to prevent the AUX heat from running unless absolutory necessary. With SmartZone, the “AUX” heat is controlled automatically based on the supply air temperature (sensor included with SmartZone). For this reason, in order to prevent AUX heat from turning on when it is not wanted by the homeowner or user of the system we have two different methods possible.

The first method is to control AUX heat from ZONE 1 thermostat then set the thermostat to disable AUX heat under whatever conditions are desired. This method has two drawbacks, it does not prevent AUX heat when other zones are calling and it REQUIRES zone 1 to ever allow AUX heat to energize.

The second method is to use a relay and a manual switch to enable and disable AUX heat whenever desired. Below is a wiring diagram for how this method works. It is a full proof way to keep AUX heat from energizing when it is not needed/wanted. A link is below for the relay needed to make this work (Any standard wall switch from a ‘big box’ store will work)
