3. Use the relay’s contacts to switch power to the ERV or HRV according to its specifications. This could be a dry contact input, a 24VAC signal, or line voltage—depending on your unit.

We recommend using a 24V DPDT relay for compatibility with most setups. It’s compact, reliable, and ideal for switching control voltage to most major ERV/HRV brands.

Very often, we talk about HVAC zone controls to solve an existing problem or to add a level of comfort and/or efficiency to a home, however, zone controls can (and some argue SHOULD) be designed in to the home from the start. An architect / engineer or home designer could make provisions in the design for zoning from the outset or to be added as an option with a few tweaks to typical mechanical plans.

Designing an HVAC System for Optimal Zone Control in Home Construction

When designing a new home, integrating an efficient and effective HVAC zoning system during the architectural phase ensures optimal comfort and energy savings. Proper planning allows for better airflow distribution, precise temperature control, and seamless integration of zoning equipment. This guide covers key considerations, including duct design, wiring, and power planning, to accommodate a zoned HVAC system.

Duct Design for Zoned HVAC Systems

Ductwork is the foundation of an effective HVAC system, and for zoning, it must be designed with flexibility and efficiency in mind. Here’s what to consider:

• Dedicated Duct Runs for Each Zone: Each zone should have its own supply ductwork leading from the main trunk line. This prevents air balancing issues and ensures consistent airflow to each area.

• Proper Sizing: Oversized ducts lead to inefficient airflow, while undersized ducts can cause excessive static pressure, straining the system. Performing a Manual D calculation will help determine the correct sizes for each duct run.

• Thermostat Placement: Each zone needs its own thermostat, wired back to the zoning panel. Thermostats should be placed in central locations within each zone, away from direct sunlight, vents, and appliances that generate heat. Use 18 or 20 AWG solid copper wiring.

• Zoning Panel Connectivity: The zoning panel acts as the system’s brain, controlling dampers and communicating with the HVAC unit. Proper wiring from each thermostat and damper to the panel ensures smooth operation. Use 18 or 20 AWG solid copper wiring.

Power Design for Zoned HVAC Systems

An HVAC zoning system requires a stable power supply to operate efficiently. Here’s what to plan for:

• Dedicated Power Supply: Ensure the HVAC system and zoning components have an independent power circuit to prevent electrical overloads.

If you have a broken Honeywell damper, don’t use these or you will end up replacing them again soon:

The Honeywell M847 or ARD or EARD or Hansen or Syncron motors are notorious for repeated failures when used in HVAD damper applications. This is usually due to a broken gear tooth or burned out motor. These are often referred to as “spring” motors because they rely on a spring to open. When 24VAC is applied to the motor, it draws over 6Watts when generated excessive heat especially in an attic that is already 120 degrees in the summer.

The issue with replacing these motors with something more reliable has traditionally been the shaft that is on the Honeywell damper is designed to ONLY fit this style of motor so it is easiest to just replace the motor with a new version of this low-quality motor. In the past, the only alternative to this was to replace the entire damper. Most of the time, the “blade” and “can” of the damper are still in great working condition even though the motor has failed so it is difficult to justify the time and cost of a full damper replacement in order to upgrade to a more reliable motor.

SO, Ecojay has released a product that allows the much more reliable Belimo motor to be used as a replacement. This “Shaft Adapter” allows for a simple and easy upgrade that will last many years longer than any alternative (and, at a lower cost).

For most modern HVAC dampers in the marketplace, the wiring terminals are labeled in an intuitive way. In other words, the terminals have labels like “OPEN” , “CLOSE”, or “24V” . This kind of labeling was not always the norm, and just a few years ago, most damper motors were either 2-wire and had NO labels or they were “5 wire” and the terminal labels were “1, 2, 3, 4, 5” thus, requiring a manual to decipher.

We have gotten calls from customers about dozens of different damper terminal labeling schemes. While there is some consistency. This is NOT always the case.

Over the years, we have released many different wiring diagrams for many different dampers and here we are attempting to create a list of all the damper wiring information we have compiled over the years.

2-Wire / Spring Dampers

One style of damper that is not shown here are 2-wire zone dampers (spring dampers) that have motors that look something like below. They all have one thing in common that you could probably guess… two wires. These wires are often not labeled and it is because the polarity does not matter. It only matters that one of them goes to the “COM” damper terminal on SmartZone and the other goes to either “OPEN” or “CLOSE”. This will depend on whether they are “Power-Open” or “Power-Close”. These types of hvac zone damper motors are powered in only one direction and they “spring” back into the opposite position. So, if you have “Power-Open” dampers the other wire should be connected to the “OPEN” terminal of the zone panel and if “Power-Close” then connect to the “CLOSE” terminal of SmartZone.
